Unique Private Tour of the Bay of Islands 5 Hour "RUSSELL ROLLICK"
- Duration: 5 Hours (approx.)
- Location: Paihia, Northland
- Product code: Jeep300
The "Russell Rollick" visits historic Kororareka (Russell) as well as two of Northland's sub-tropical rain-forests allowing you to experience the massive Kauri trees. Explore the Bay's surrounds while being driven through our fabulous countryside, farmland and historic settlements. The price includes up to four passengers in your group and if both of our guides are available, we can cater for groups of up to eight. Simply book two "Kauri Caper" tours and you can swap between Jeeps if you want.
On your tour we leave Paihia before engaging the Jeep's 4WD and traversing unsealed roads to get to the Opua Forest for a 20-minute walk. Here you can see some of the magnificent kauri trees and native bush along a well-formed trail reaching the viewpoint into the canopy of the forest. Next we trek down to the quirky town of Kawakawa where a historic railway line passes through town down the middle of State Highway 1. Kawakawa is also the home of the famous Hundertwasser toilets, renovated in 1999-2000 by artist Fredrich Hundertwasser and the local community. It is his only southern hemisphere building and his last project before his death. Then we head through rural farmland to reach the Russell forest where another kauri waits to be experienced from ground level giving you a true idea of the bulk of these massive trees.
Travelling along the northern shore of the Waikere Inlet takes us to the historic township of Russell. In the early 1800's it was known as Kororareka, "The Hell Hole of the Pacific" due to the extensive drinking establishments and "supporting" business for the sailors off whaling ships anchored in the Bay. Here there you can purchase lunch from your choice of any of the many excellent restaurants and cafes available.
The tour ends with a vehicle ferry ride to the seaside port of Opua before making our way back to where we started in Paihia.
We really love being able to personalise our tours for our clients and can change the details on the day to suit the weather, people’s energy levels and specific interests.
